The risk of human life is much more at the forefront, especially in the use of forklifts with baskets. And when they are not used correctly, they can cause serious work accidents and financial losses. Therefore, it is essential to follow certain safety rules during forklift operation, both legally and operationally.
In this article, we detail all the elements that should be considered when using a forklift.
1. Operator Training and Certification
Personnel to use forklift must have a forklift operator certificate approved by the Ministry of National Education must have the necessary skills. Forklifts used by untrained people run the risk of tipping over, crashing or dropping loads in the simplest error.
- Theoretical and practical training
- Certificate and authorization document should be checked
- Retraining should be provided on new machines
2. Daily Preliminary Checks
It is vital that a simple safety check is carried out before the truck is put into daily use:
- Are hydraulic systems leaking?
- Do the brakes, lights, horn, mirrors work?
- Are the tires inflated enough?
- Is there any damage to the fork and attachment points?
3. Maneuvering Space and Speed Control
Environmental awareness must be high during maneuvering, as the truck operates in confined and crowded spaces. The operator must give an audible warning at each turn and avoid excessive speed.
- Keep a distance of 2 meters for pedestrians and 1 meter for other vehicles
- Reverse if visibility is obstructed by the load while driving
- Descents and ascents on slopes should be made slowly and carefully.

4. Load Balance and Weight Distribution
The stability of the truck is directly dependent on the shape and weight of the load it carries. The maximum capacity indicated in the manufacturer's catalogs must not be exceeded under any circumstances.
- The load should be placed in the center and at the bottom of the forks
- Unbalanced and asymmetric loads should be divided and transported
- Transport height must not obstruct the operator's view
5. Using the Forklift Basket: Working Safely at Heights
There are occasions when a forklift is used not only for carrying loads, but also for lifting personnel. This is where the “forklift basket” comes into play.
What is a forklift basket?
A forklift basket (or forklift personnel platform) is a CE-certified transport apparatus made of steel or aluminum, mounted on the forks of a forklift. It provides a safe working environment for maintenance, assembly and repair work at high points in construction sites and factories.
Things to watch out for:
- The basket must never be lifted without being secured
- The occupant must wear a seat belt
- Check the flatness of the ground before the forklift is moved
- The door must be locked, the railings must be strong and 110 cm high
Where are Forklift Baskets Used?
- Construction site exterior facades, signage assembly, painting and mold works
- Crane maintenance, air conditioning installation, installation works in factories
- Intervention to shelf systems in warehouses, LED lighting maintenance
- High area cleaning works in corporate structures such as shopping malls, hospitals, schools
